Pig farming, a branch of animal husbandry, also known as hog farming, involves the raising and breeding of domestic pigs – livestock, which serve as a source of meat for consumption and raw material for production/manufacturing. Swine or Porcine as you may also know it, are principally good meat for consumption, which may be: Edible, e.g.; Pork, Steak, Bacon, Gammon, or Inedible, e.g.; Water filters, Insulation, Rubber, Antifreeze, certain Plastics, Floor waxes, Crayons, Chalk, Adhesives and Fertilizer. Fat from pigs’ abdomens, lard, is used in shaving Creams, Soaps, Make-up and the list goes on.
Pigs may be raised in different ways – intensive commercial units, commercial free-range style, or extensive farming (free to wander around in a community; or tamed in simple pens outside in the farm or home).
